SUMMARY:Thursday Afternoon Garden Tai Chi with Gina Bari
DESCRIPTION:Complimentary for BHWC Members. This Tai Chi class with Gina Bari is absolutely fantastic! Embrace this opportunity to explore the magic of Tai Chi in BHWC’s perfect\, private beautiful garden setting. \nYour mental and physical flexibility will be enhanced! A wonderful gift to give yourself! \nComfortable clothing and sneakers is all you need! \nTai Chi\, a traditional\, slow-moving form of Chinese martial art\, is known to increase flexibility and improve balance.  Gina Bari has taught Tai Chi for many years on behalf of the Jewish Family Institute of Los Angeles\, Swezy Institute\, the City of Santa Monica as well as the Parkinson’s and Diabetes foundations through Cedars-Sinai and St. John’s Health Center. \nAs reported by NPR\, now new research suggests it’s better than more vigorous aerobic exercises for lowering blood pressure in people with prehypertension.  Prehypertension is blood pressure that’s higher than normal but doesn’t quite reach the level of high blood pressure\, or hypertension. It’s considered a warning sign that heart disease may be ahead\, and it raises the risk of having a heart attack. \nThe new findings\, published in the journal JAMA Network Open\, add to a large body of research pointing to health benefits from tai chi\, a wellness practice that combines slow\, gentle movements and postures with mindfulness. It’s often called meditation in motion.

SUMMARY:Making of LA Ballet Memoryhouse Documentary Screening at The Wallis
DESCRIPTION:This documentary film follows choreographer Melissa Barak as she dives in head first with her creative team in order to bring a ballet inspired by the Holocaust to emotional life. Post-screening conversation will feature Barak\, Holocaust survivors\, and HMLA’s Chief Impact Officer Jordanna Gessler. \nAboutMaking of Memoryhouse is a documentary film following choreographer Melissa Barak as she dives in headfirst with her creative team in order to bring a ballet inspired by the Holocaust to emotional life. Through performance and rehearsal clips\, as well as interviews and powerful survivor testimony\, we are brought into the creative process where Barak works on building a theatrical dance experience like no other. \nMelissa Barak is a choreographer and former professional dancer with New York City Ballet (NYCB) andLos Angeles Ballet. Born and raised in Los Angeles\, Barak began her ballet training at the age of eight at Westside School of Ballet in Santa Monica. Her training continued in New York City at the School ofAmerican Ballet (SAB)\, the official school of NYCB. In 1998\, Barak was invited to join NYCB where she performed in numerous works by George Balanchine and Jerome Robbins. \nBarak began exploring her choreographic talents throughout her time at SAB and NYCB. At the age of 21\,she premiered her work Telemann Overture Suite in E Minor at the SAB June Workshop performance thatquickly followed up with encore performances on NYCB the following season. Later that year another choreographic commission was offered by NYCB for their prestigious Diamond Project making her\, at the time\, the youngest choreographer to create an original work for the company. She has created new works for the Los Angeles Philharmonic\, Richmond Ballet\, Dayton Ballet\, American Repertory Ballet\, Sacramento Ballet\, Los Angeles Ballet\, and Barak Ballet\, a Los Angeles based contemporary ballet company she founded in 2013. Melissa has been awarded the Mae L. Wein and Choo San Goh awards for Outstanding Choreography and has been named a Dance Magazine “Top 25 to Watch”. She was also the inaugural recipient of the Virginia B. Toulmin Fellowship for Women Choreographers through Center for Ballet andthe Arts at NYU.\nBarak was appointed to be the new artistic director of Los Angeles Ballet in August 2022 where she looksforward to ushering in a new era of great dance for the company and the greater Los Angeles arts scene. \n\n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:4th Annual Beverly Hills Run of the Stars 5k
DESCRIPTION:For a second year\, BHWC is a proud sponsor of this event that supports Not Today Cancer and their mission to find a cure for devastating childhood cancers. Despite childhood cancer rates being on the rise\, a desperately small amount of US Federal Funding for Cancer Research goes to children. Get out your running shoes and run (or walk) this annual 5k run (3.1 miles). This year\, the run begins at the newly opened El Rodeo Elementary and tours the surrounding iconic and charming streets of Beverly Hills.  There are plenty of ways to Run with the Stars – participate as a racer\, walk with friends\, do a “5k from Anywhere” or join us at BHWC’s booth.
